SALUD PILates

Jess Barzell Bio

Jess’s teacher training style reflects her 15-years of private and group Pilates teaching experience in New York City as well as her thirst for knowledge. In her teaching career that spans elementary dance programs to the University of Virginia’s Dance program, she has immersed herself in biomechanics and movement principles that has led her to complete certifications and workshops in and outside of Pilates such as FAMI, a cadaver workshop in NYC and AIM, Anatomy in Motion (gait and foot), Anatomy Trains with Tom Myers, EFT tapping and Barre cert with Yoga Works.  Jess holds Pilates certifications from STOTT Pilates, the renowned Kane School of Core Integration in NYC and Teri Steele Mat Pilates for Dancers. She is also a NASM certified Personal Trainer. 

Jess was a leading teacher trainer for the internationally recognized Erika Bloom Pilates in NYC for 4 years and a recruiter for certification students in the program before starting her own business leading her to research the competition. She is passionate about teaching teachers and strives to be generous in the knowledge she has learned from so many teachers over her professional career. 

Jess has experience working with young athletes, CEO’s, celebrities, aging populations and injured students and thereby imparts teachings that are applicable to a wide student body and in a clear way from her experience working with so many different people of varying backgrounds. 

Jess has an MA in dance choreography and performance from FSU and danced professionally for a year in Florida before moving to DC to teach as the Head Pilates Teacher for the Kirov Academy of Dance and teaching at the University of Virginia as a Lecture Professor of Dance while starting an afterschool program at a charter school for the arts in Tallahassee, FL. 

What to expect in the pilates certification

  • Created, mentored and supervised by Jess Shaps and guest teachers from esteemed programs. Students will be learning from the very best in the Pilates and biomechanics world.  

  • Learn the science behind how and why Pilates really works with foundation lectures on Anatomy, Kinesiology, Movement Science and how it applies to the Pilates method.

  • Move and learn to teach both Classical and Contemporary Beginner to Advanced Pilates exercises in Mat and Equipment programs.  Become proficient with the Reformer, Chair, Spine Corrector, Magic Circle and many other Pilates props.  .

  • Learn how to teach Pilates to new clients, experienced clients and most important, clients with injuries and medical conditions like postural and alignment issues, disc herniation, shoulder, neck, knee, hip, ankle and foot problems, pre and post-natal and much more.

  • Supervised teaching, continuous student assessments/evaluations and written and practical testing are included to ensure that you are progressing to the best of your teaching ability.

  • A Comprehensive Mat & Reformer and Chair Teacher Training Certification is awarded upon completion of all the requirements of the Program. The Education you receive in this Program will fully prepare you to teach Pilates anywhere. There are many bridge programs available to get you certified on the Cadillac and Barrel. Ask about.

  • Students teach each other how to modify exercises for Special Population clients with Teacher Trainer Supervision.

  • How to build a session Group and Private Sessions 

  • Signature Salud Portland classes training 

  • Learn manual releases and hands on cueing and other listening tools to strengthen your teaching  

  • Learn how to make teaching your own creative practice with Jess Tabby Shaps signature “the business and art of teaching” lecture




SALUD BARRE

BarreSalud is a comprehensive Barre certification preparing students to build and teach an effective, fun, and engaging Barre class. You will learn the principles of movement, anatomy, biomechanics, ideal posture in all areas of the body, common injuries and modifications, cueing group classes, and designing the playlist.   • 10 hours of Lecture, 5 hours self practice, 5 hours Barre Classes, 5 hours Supervised Teaching/Observing other teach

  • Comprehensive Barre Including Anatomy, Biomechanics/ Movement principles, Posture and Common Injuries and Prevention, Cueing - Verbal and Hands on, Building a Barre Class, Tips on Teaching Group Classes

  • Certificate of Completion given on October 15th upon passing written and performance exam!

Dorienne Lewin

Salud Portland Founder and Owner, Barre Teacher Trainer

Dorienne Lewin graduated from Point Park University in Pittsburgh with a BA in Modern Dance. Having a strong understanding of movement and body awareness, she continued her education becoming a nationally certified Personal Trainer, Pilates, Yoga, Barre, and Bounce instructor. She received her certifications through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Temple of Kriya Yoga, Physical Mind Institute, Pilates Method Alliance and BarSculpt. Through the system of self-improvement and realization Dorienne’s students will uncover strength and flexibility in the mind and body.

Jess has taught Pilates, Dance Cardio and Barre in New York City, Boston and now Portland, Maine for 15 years. Former Professor of Dance at University of Virginia,  Jess holds certifications from STOTT Pilates, Kane School of Core Integration (Comprehensive Pilates),  Pilates Mat for Dancers, NASM certified Personal Trainer and BarreWorks. Jess’ quest for knowledge has led her to complete certifications such as FAMI, a cadaver workshop at Mount Sinai Hospital and Anatomy in Motion (gait and foot mechanics). Jess was a leading teacher trainer for the internationally recognized Erika Bloom Pilates in NYC for 4 years before starting her own Pilates Certification. She is passionate about teaching teachers and has a wide range of teaching experience including working with young and older athletes, celebrities, ceo’s, aging populations and students recovering from injury.
